In a bizarre accident, a tram collided with a speeding response emergency vehicle, a National Health Service (NHS) ambulance, in Nottingham City Centre on Friday afternoon.

The ambulance was heavily damaged, but no one was hurt in the accident and no injuries were reported at the scene of the accident and everyone involved is believed to be fine.

According to an eyewitness to the accident, Catherine Gonzalenz, 52, the collision happened near the Theatre Royal, near the traffic lights at the end of Goldsmith Street.

Said Gonzalenz: “I was walking along Goldsmith Street in the City Centre with my daughter and her friend when we suddenly heard a loud bang and only to see that it a crash between the tram and an ambulance. How bizarre… It could have been worse, but it is so relieving that no one got hurt.”

The incident reportedly happened shortly before 15:00 hours in the afternoon of Friday, 23 September 2022.

East Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “One of our fast response cars was involved in a road traffic collision with a tram in Nottingham this afternoon, causing vehicle damage.

There were no injuries reported at the scene.”

The incident caused disruption to the tram network in the city centre and as a result of the crash NCT buses temporarily accepted tram tickets on all its buses to transport those with tram tickets.

In a tweet, the tram operator NET, apologised to its clientele and everyone for the inconvenience caused by the accident.

This is not the first time for a tram and an emergency response vehicle to crash.

In 2016 an ambulance and a tram also crashed in the city centre in an accident that left four people injured and a batch of paramedics rushed to the scene.

Three people, including the ambulance crew, were taken to hospital and a tram passenger was treated for minor injuries.

Both the vehicles had had smashed windscreens and the ambulance was left with a flat tyre.

The affected Nottingham road near the tram stop was blocked off for about four hours as the tram was pushed off its rails form the force of the impact.
