Dolfina Kawera: Many schools in Kenya have recognized the immense potential of digital learning platforms to supplement traditional teaching methods. Platforms such as eLimu and Eneza Education have been widely adopted, offering interactive content and educational resources aligned with the national curriculum. These platforms provide students with access to a diverse range of subjects, practice quizzes, and educational games, making the learning experience more engaging and accessible.

YFLab Kenya: Can you provide an example of how Ruiru Boys High School is integrating technology into its educational practices?

Dolfina Kawera: At Ruiru Boys High School, we have embraced the use of Dawati, an online education platform designed to provide high-quality educational content for secondary school students. Dawati offers a wide array of resources, including classwork videos, laboratory practicals, course-work ebooks, solved evaluations, and exams. With its web-based platform and Android application, students can easily access this rich content, enhancing their understanding of various subjects.

YFLab Kenya: How has the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the adoption of digital learning in Kenyan schools?

Dolfina Kawera: The indefinite closure of schools for over eight months due to the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted learning and syllabus coverage, especially for schools that had not invested in technology infrastructure and connectivity. This unexpected turn of events caught many public schools off-guard. However, it highlighted the importance of embracing technology to ensure continuous learning and preparedness for such unprecedented situations in the future.

YFLab Kenya: In your opinion, why is it crucial for Kenyan high schools to prepare students for the digital world?

Dolfina Kawera: It is essential to prepare our young generation for the digital world that lies ahead. The way students work, access services, create business linkages and networks, and market their innovations and skills will be greatly influenced by their digital literacy. We must equip them with the necessary skills to navigate this digital era successfully. Platforms like eLimu and Eneza Education provide interactive content that engages students, while coding and robotics programs nurture problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

YFLab Kenya: How can partnerships and initiatives assist in the integration of technology in Kenyan high schools?

Dolfina Kawera: Partnerships with organizations like YFLab Kenya are crucial in supporting high schools across the country. Initiatives such as the Kenya Education Network (KENET) have been instrumental in improving internet connectivity in schools like Ruiru Boys High School. This connectivity enables students and teachers to access online resources, collaborate with peers, and explore a broader learning landscape. By partnering with organizations like YFLab Kenya, we can collectively contribute to the growth and success of digital learning in Kenya.
