Heroes of communities across Nottingham have been recognised and honoured at the Nottingham Housing Heroes Awards at the city’s Council House.
The awards, hosted by Nottingham City Homes and formerly known as the Tenant and Leaseholder Awards, recognise and honour people and groups who make a real difference to their communities.
Kevin Lowry, Nottingham City Council’s Interim Strategic Director of Housing, says, “Being able to recognise and say thank you to our neighbourhood community heroes is so important, and the awards night was truly inspirational.
“We have so many great people living on our council estates across the city, and it’s fantastic to be able to recognise them in this way.”
This year’s winners include Shifting your Mindset, a BAME Dads’ programme in Bilborough that won both the Best Health and Wellbeing Project and the Best Green Initiative awards this year.
Shifting your Mindset is a group of dads who come together to help individuals and the local community improve their wellbeing, reduce isolation, and foster positive connections.
According to the Nottingham City Council, the group has a real focus on creating a welcoming environment for men to come together, talk about how they’re feeling and to share their thoughts and ideas to support each other to become better people and fathers to their children.
They say that group provides male-focused programmes with tailored support, services, courses that are helping to improve the wellbeing, confidence, and lives of those who attend.
Winner of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award is Angie Stanton, of Lenton Abbey.
Angie supports her local community in lots of ways and is a key cog in the running of the Sheila Roper Community Centre, working alongside AJ Sports, who manage the centre, to help make it a real hub for the Lenton Abbey community.
Councillor Sally Longford, Ward Councillor for Lenton Abbey and Wollaton East, says, “Angie is an inspiration. She works tirelessly for the residents of Lenton Abbey and without her hard work and dedication, it wouldn’t be the place it is today. This award is extremely well-deserved.”
