The Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) of Kenya has announced a halt on the export of avocados to international markets, effective October 25, 2024. This decision aims to protect and enhance the quality of avocados exported from the country.
One of the primary reasons for this suspension is a projected decrease in the volumes of avocados expected in upcoming harvests. In collaboration with the Horticultural Crops Directorate (HCD), the AFA issued the directive as part of a strategic effort to sustain and develop Kenya’s international avocado markets by minimizing disruption in the crop cycle that results from the harvesting of immature fruits.
A nationwide survey conducted by the AFA Directorate revealed insufficient quantities of main season crop yields in major avocado-producing regions, prompting this export ban. The survey also assessed current production trends and provided forecasts for the next main season.
Dr. Bruno Linyiru, Director General of the AFA, stated, “The suspension of Hass, Pinkerton, Fuerte, and Jumbo harvesting for sea shipment in the fiscal year 2024/2025 will begin on the specified date.” He clarified that while the sea shipment of these varieties will be halted, air exports will still be permitted, subject to inspection and the provision of traceability information for all consignments.
The AFA emphasized that this temporary export suspension is a proactive measure intended to ensure the quality of avocados available in international markets. The authority plans to continue monitoring avocado maturity trends and will review the situation in December 2024.
