Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed grave concerns for his safety, revealing that there have been multiple attempts on his life. Gachagua, who recently faced impeachment, disclosed that individuals have tried to poison him and have monitored his communications during a visit to Kisumu two months prior.
Speaking outside Karen Hospital after his discharge, Gachagua articulated his fears, stating he would continue to be under medical observation at home. He recounted a troubling incident that took place on August 30 in Kisumu, where he alleged that security personnel entered his room, bugging it and attempting to poison his food. Luckily, he claimed they detected the plot in time, allowing him to escape the ordeal.
“In September, another group attempted to poison food intended for me and the Kikuyu Council of Elders while I was in Nyeri,” he added. Concerned for his well-being, Gachagua mentioned that he had to dismiss some intelligence officers from his office due to the ongoing threats he perceived.
He reported these incidents to the National Intelligence Service (NIS) and took measures to ensure his safety. “After the two assassination attempts failed, the impeachment motion against me was initiated,” Gachagua noted.
On the same day, Gachagua shared a message of goodwill for the nation as it celebrated its 61st Mashujaa Day, despite opting not to attend the festivities taking place in Kwale County. He extended prayers for blessings upon the country, writing, “Happy Mashujaa Day dear Kenyans. God Bless our nation,” on his social media account.
Gachagua’s impeachment was confirmed by the Senate just days earlier, with five charges brought against him. The motion, presented by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, saw 281 MPs vote in favor of removing him, while only 44 voted against the motion.
