In a stunning development that has sent shockwaves through Kenya’s political landscape, the country’s National Assembly has voted to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. This unprecedented move comes amidst growing tensions and a deepening rift within the ruling of UDA party, just months ahead of the highly anticipated 2022 general elections.

The impeachment process was initiated last week when a group of opposition lawmakers, led by Kibwezi member of parliament, tabled a motion accusing Rigathi Gachagua of gross violation of the constitution, abuse of office, and crimes against the people of Kenya. The motion was swiftly approved by the National Assembly, with 281 members voting in favor of impeachment, far exceeding the required simple majority.

The specific charges against Rigathi include allegations of misappropriation of public funds, undermining the authority of the president, and inciting political divisions. According to the motion, Rigathi has been using his office to advance his own political agenda, with little regard for the wellbeing of the nation.

“The deputy president has demonstrated a blatant disregard for the rule of law and the principles of good governance,” said Junet Mohamed. “His actions have not only undermined the stability of our government but have also eroded the public’s trust in our democratic institutions.”

The impeachment process now moves to the Senate, where a two-thirds majority is required to remove Rigathi from office. Given the political dynamics in the upper house, the outcome remains uncertain, with both the ruling party and the opposition whipping their members to vote along party lines.

President Uhuru Kenyatta, who has had a tumultuous relationship with his deputy in recent years, has largely remained silent on the matter, though his allies have been vocal in their support for the impeachment. President Ruto has struggled to maintain unity within the UDA Party, with Rigathi and his faction openly challenging the president’s agenda and policies.

The fallout from this political crisis could have far-reaching consequences for Kenya’s political stability. Rigathi, who was previously seen as the frontrunner in the 2022 presidential race, has vowed to fight the impeachment, accusing the government of orchestrating a witch-hunt against him.

“This is a blatant abuse of power and a violation of the constitution,” Rigathi said in a statement. “I will use every legal and democratic means at my disposal to defend my rights and the will of the people who elected me.”

The impeachment saga has also drawn the attention of the international community, with various diplomatic missions in Kenya expressing concern over the political tensions and urging all parties to resolve their differences through peaceful and democratic means.

“We are closely monitoring the situation in Kenya and call on all parties to respect the rule of law and the democratic process,” said a spokesperson for the European Union delegation in Nairobi.

As the political drama unfolds, Kenyans are left to wonder about the long-term implications of this crisis. Some fear that the deep divisions within the UDA Party could further destabilize the country, potentially leading to a protracted power struggle that could undermine economic progress and social cohesion.

However, others see the impeachment as an opportunity for a much-needed reset in Kenyan politics, with the potential to pave the way for a more inclusive and transparent government that prioritizes the needs of the people over personal or partisan interests.

Regardless of the outcome, the impeachment of Kenya’s deputy president has undoubtedly shaken the foundations of the country’s political landscape, leaving many Kenyans to wonder what the future holds for their nation.
