Kenyatta University has stepped forward to provide financial assistance to the families of 11 students who tragically lost their lives in a recent road accident. The incident occurred when a school bus carrying a group of 58 students collided with a trailer at Maungu in Voi. The university, represented by Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Wainaina, disbursed a total of Sh2 million to the bereaved reallyparents during a solemn ceremony.

Expressing gratitude for the generous contribution of Sh2 million donated by President William Ruto during a requiem mass, Professor Wainaina highlighted the ongoing support received from various benefactors nationwide. He emphasized the collective effort to aid those affected by the tragedy. Each parent received a cheque amounting to Sh181,818 to assist them during this difficult time.
Professor Wainaina acknowledged that the situation at the university has been very challenging, and both students and staff are working hard to come to terms with the loss. He revealed that most of the hospitalized students have been discharged, with only three remaining hospitalized, one of whom is in critical condition. Despite the profound impact of the incident, Professor Wainaina affirmed the institution’s resilience and commitment to supporting those affected.
In an effort to foster solidarity and healing, Kenyatta University will hold an inter-faith event on the forthcoming Sunday. The event will be officiated by Dorcas Gachagua, the wife of the Deputy President. Wainaina assured transparency in the utilization of the donated funds, stating that they will be used to aid the recovery of the students.
Samuel Mureithi, father of the late John Mbereri, expressed gratitude for the university’s support in coping with their profound loss. He shared his deep sorrow over the untimely end of a cherished son and friend, but also found solace and support in Kenyatta University during this painful journey.
The 11 students who lost their lives in the accident are Navile Omondi Opiyo, Beneas Otieno, Hellen Mbula Kisilu, Michael Muteti, Vallary Akinyi Ouma, and Oslo Mwendwa. The other unfortunate victims are Felix Gori Nyaata, Austine Omondi Owino, Rodger Kiprotich Rono, John Mbiriri Mureithi, and Patricia Murugi Mwangi.
