In a vibrant display of solidarity and recognition, Embu County celebrated International Women’s Day on March 8th, 2024, at the bustling Moi Stadium. The theme for this year’s celebration, “Inspire Inclusion,” resonated throughout the event, emphasizing the indispensable role of women in every facet of society.

As the sun illuminated the stadium, President William Ruto graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, underlining the government’s commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment. Joining him were esteemed dignitaries including Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Cabinet Secretaries, Council of Governors chairperson Anne Waiguru, and governors from various counties, including Embu, Homa Bay, Nakuru, Machakos, Kwale, and Meru. Their presence underscored the collective effort towards fostering an environment where women thrive and contribute meaningfully to nation-building.

Central to the day’s festivities were the commendations bestowed upon two remarkable women, Rachel Ruto and Brig. Joyce C. Sitienei, for their unwavering dedication to advancing the rights and well-being of women and girls.

Rachel’s recognition stemmed from her tireless advocacy for women and girls, particularly in addressing the challenges they face. Her initiatives, including the promotion of clean cooking solutions, have not only improved health and safety but have also empowered women to lead healthier and more sustainable lives. Through her actions, Rachel exemplifies the transformative power of grassroots efforts in effecting positive change within communities.

Brig. Joyce C. Sitienei’s acknowledgment was a testament to her exemplary leadership in advancing the cause of women’s and girls’ peace and security. In conflict-affected regions, her steadfast commitment to amplifying women’s voices and safeguarding their rights has been instrumental in fostering stability and resilience. Her dedication serves as a beacon of hope, inspiring others to champion gender equality and inclusivity in all spheres of society.

The celebrations resonated beyond the confines of Moi Stadium, igniting conversations and actions aimed at fostering a more inclusive and equitable society. From panel discussions to cultural performances, the event served as a platform for dialogue and reflection on the progress made and the challenges that lie ahead in achieving gender parity.

As the day drew to a close, the echoes of empowerment reverberated throughout Embu County, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of all who attended. International Women’s Day in Embu County was not merely a commemoration but a rallying cry for collective action towards a future where every woman and girl is afforded the opportunity to thrive and succeed.

In honoring Rachel, Brig. Joyce C. Sitienei, and countless other women, Embu County reaffirmed its commitment to inspiring change and creating a more inclusive society for generations to come.

International Women’s Day may have ended, but the spirit of empowerment it ignited continues to fuel the journey towards a more just and equitable world. As we reflect on the events of the day, let us remain steadfast in our resolve to champion the rights and dignity of women everywhere, for their empowerment is key to the progress and prosperity of us all.

”celebrating International Women’s Day is not just about acknowledging the achievements of extraordinary women; it’s about recognizing the inherent value and potential within every woman and girl, and striving to create a world where they can fully realize their dreams and aspirations.” – Deputy President Ruto
