On June 10th, representatives from Youth Future Lab (YFL) and Mojatu Women (MW) came together for a pivotal meeting with the Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA). This significant gathering marked the beginning of what promises to be a powerful collaboration aimed at combating female genital mutilation (FGM) and addressing various challenges faced by women and girls within our communities.

FIDA, a prominent organization dedicated to upholding the rights of women and children, has been at the forefront of legal advocacy and support for victims of gender-based violence (GBV) and FGM. Their extensive work includes providing legal aid, pushing for policy changes, and raising awareness about the issues women and girls face in Kenya. The meeting with YFL and MW was an opportunity to explore how these organizations could join forces and amplify their impact.

The primary objective of the meeting was to discuss potential partnerships and collaborative efforts that could enhance the fight against FGM and other forms of GBV. FGM remains a critical issue in many Kenyan communities, where traditional practices continue to endanger the lives and well-being of young girls. By partnering with FIDA, YFL and MW aimed to strengthen their efforts and leverage FIDA’s legal expertise and extensive network.

During the meeting, various ideas were exchanged on how the organizations could work together. The discussion centered around joint initiatives that could provide comprehensive support to women and girls, including legal aid, educational programs, and community outreach. Additionally, there was a strong emphasis on the importance of applying for funds collaboratively to support these initiatives and ensure their sustainability.

One of the key takeaways from the meeting was the need to submit a detailed proposal outlining the services YFL and MW could offer to FIDA. This proposal would serve as the foundation for the partnership, showcasing the unique strengths and capabilities of both organizations. Some of the proposed services included:

Free Website Development and Maintenance: Recognizing the importance of a robust online presence, YFL and MW offered to develop and maintain a website for FIDA. This platform would serve as a valuable resource for disseminating information, raising awareness, and providing support to victims of FGM and GBV.

Community Outreach Programs: Leveraging YFL’s expertise in community engagement, the proposal highlighted plans for conducting educational workshops and awareness campaigns. These programs would aim to educate communities about the dangers of FGM and the importance of protecting women’s rights.

Legal Aid Clinics: With FIDA’s legal expertise and YFL’s community reach, the collaboration envisioned setting up legal aid clinics in underserved areas. These clinics would provide free legal support to victims of GBV and FGM, ensuring they have access to justice and necessary resources.

Capacity Building and Training: The proposal also included plans for capacity-building workshops for community leaders and volunteers. These training sessions would equip individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to advocate for women’s rights and effectively combat harmful practices like FGM.

The meeting concluded on a positive note, with all parties expressing optimism about the potential partnership. FIDA’s representatives were impressed with the dedication and vision of YFL and MW, acknowledging the value of their proposed services. The collaborative spirit and shared commitment to protecting women’s rights set a strong foundation for future joint efforts.

As YFL and MW prepare to submit their proposal, there is a sense of excitement and determination to make a meaningful impact. The partnership with FIDA holds the promise of creating a safer, more supportive environment for women and girls in Kenya. By combining legal advocacy, community outreach, and educational initiatives, this collaboration has the potential to drive significant change and empower communities to reject harmful practices like FGM.

The meeting on June 10th was just the beginning of what promises to be a transformative journey. As YFL and MW move forward with their proposal, there is hope that this partnership will lead to long-lasting positive change. Together with FIDA, they are committed to fighting for a future where every woman and girl can live free from violence and discrimination.
