In a harrowing incident, an Umma Express bus, ferrying 51 passengers from Garissa to Nairobi, was tragically swept away by raging floodwaters at Lager Areli Tana River. County Commander Ali Ndiema has confirmed the devastating event, triggering urgent rescue efforts to locate and save any survivors. The incident unfolded amidst heavy rains and rising water levels, turning the tranquil journey into a nightmare for the passengers aboard the bus.

Eyewitnesses described a scene of chaos as the bus was swiftly carried away by the powerful currents, leaving little time for escape or assistance.”We heard screams for help as the bus was swept away,” recounted one witness, who rushed to alert authorities about the unfolding tragedy.

Following the distress call, rescue teams mobilized swiftly, deploying boats to scour the turbulent waters for any signs of life. Emergency services, including the Kenya Red Cross Society, the National Disaster Management Unit, and local volunteers, have converged on the area, working tirelessly to locate and rescue survivors.

“We are doing everything in our power to locate and rescue those who may still be trapped,” assured County Commander Ali Ndiema, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. However, the treacherous conditions, including strong currents and debris-laden waters, have hampered rescue efforts, presenting a formidable challenge for responders.

As the search and rescue operation continues, hopes remain high for the safe recovery of any individuals who may still be stranded.Meanwhile, authorities have urged residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and exercise caution during this period of heightened weather-related risks. With forecasts predicting continued heavy rainfall in the region, preemptive measures are being taken to prevent any further incidents of this nature.

The Umma Express bus tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the unpredictable and unforgiving nature of natural disasters, underscoring the importance of preparedness and swift emergency response in safeguarding lives and communities. As the rescue operation unfolds, the thoughts and prayers of the nation are with the passengers and their loved ones, hoping for a swift and successful resolution to this devastating ordeal.
