In a dramatic move responding to the widespread demands of the Gen Z youth, President William Ruto of Kenya has dissolved his entire cabinet. This decision comes after weeks of intense anti-government protests driven by frustrations over the controversial Finance Bill 2024 and broader issues of government inefficiency and corruption.

The youth-led demonstrations saw tens of thousands taking to the streets, leading to violent clashes with police that resulted in over 40 deaths and more than 300 injuries. The protests escalated into a nationwide call for systemic change, with many demanding Ruto’s resignation alongside the overhaul of his cabinet.

President Ruto announced the dismissal of all cabinet secretaries and the Attorney-General, sparing only Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi. Principal Secretaries will temporarily manage the respective ministries until new appointments are made. Ruto cited the need for a thorough appraisal of the cabinet’s performance and alignment with public expectations as reasons for the shake-up.

The protests, ignited by the Finance Bill, evolved into a broader condemnation of the government’s handling of economic policies and widespread corruption. The youth, particularly vocal on social media platforms, leveraged their collective power to push for these significant changes, showcasing their influence on national politics.

Moving forward, President Ruto has pledged to form a more inclusive and efficient government. He announced a multi-sectoral convention to engage various stakeholders, including religious institutions, civil society, and professional organizations, in shaping the new administration. However, this approach has drawn criticism from some youth leaders who fear it may be an attempt to dilute their demands by involving traditional political figures like Azimio leader Raila Odinga.

This unprecedented cabinet dissolution marks a pivotal moment in Kenya’s political landscape, driven by a generation demanding transparency, accountability, and genuine representation. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether the new appointments and subsequent reforms will satisfy the calls for change resonating across the nation.
