FGM has no health benefits and it harms girls and women in
many ways. FGM is a violation of human rights that transcends
borders, affecting girls and women in various regions around
the world. The event on February 6 will provide a platform to
discuss the global impact of FGM, emphasizing the need for
collaborative efforts to create a world where no woman or girl is
subjected to this harmful practice.

Key Objectives of the Event:
Raise Awareness: The primary goal of the event is to raise
awareness about the detrimental effects of FGM. Through
educational initiatives, discussions, and outreach programs,
participants will be equipped with the knowledge needed to
advocate for change.
Encourage Dialogue: Open conversations are crucial in
challenging cultural norms and fostering understanding. The
event will facilitate dialogue among communities, policymakers, and activists to address the root causes of FGM and promote
alternative, healthier practices.
Support Survivors: Those who have undergone FGM often face
physical and psychological challenges. The event will
emphasize the importance of providing support and resources
to survivors, empowering them to share their stories and
advocate for change.
Advocate for Policy Change: Governments play a crucial role in
eradicating FGM by implementing and enforcing laws that
criminalize the practice. The event will call for increased
political commitment and policy changes to protect girls and
women from FGM.
Legal Measures: Advocate for and support the implementation
of laws criminalizing FGM. Ensure strict enforcement and
penalties for those who perform or facilitate FGM.
Collaborate with legal authorities to raise awareness about the
legal consequences of practicing or promoting FGM.

Taking Action:
Individuals and organizations are encouraged to participate
actively in the event on 6th Feb, 2024. Whether through
hosting local awareness campaigns, engaging in social media
advocacy, or attending organized events, everyone has a role
to play in the fight against FGM. By standing together on this
day, we can amplify our collective voice and work towards
creating a world free from the harms of Female Genital
Mutilation.

In conclusion, World FGM Day on 6th Feb, 2024 themed on
“Her voice, her future” stands as a powerful reminder of our
collective responsibility to eradicate the deeply entrenched

practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). As we reflect on
the significance of this day, it becomes evident that our
commitment to raising awareness, engaging in open dialogue,
supporting survivors, and advocating for policy changes is
paramount.

The global impact of FGM requires a unified response that
transcends borders, cultures, and communities. By designating
6th Feb as World FGM Day, we have set a course for
change, emphasizing the urgency of action and the need for
sustained efforts in addressing this grave violation of human
rights.

“If countries invest to end female genital mutilation, they can prevent their girls from undergoing this harmful practice and promote the health, rights and well-being of women and girls.” states Dr Christina Pallitto, scientist at WHO.
