On a recent visit to a disadvantaged community, Youth Future Lab (YFL) had the opportunity to assess the real-life challenges faced by residents and brainstorm potential solutions to improve their living conditions. Our team’s findings paint a picture of hardship, resilience, and a collective desire for change. Through engagement with local community members, we identified the critical areas of need and ways we can support sustainable development in the region.

The lack of sufficient farming land has left many families struggling to produce enough food. Natural disasters like droughts and floods, coupled with the unfortunate need to sell land for emergency medical expenses, have worsened the problem. We observed that many children rely on meals provided by the church, which has become a lifeline for those who might otherwise go hungry.

Introducing poultry farming in the community could enhance food availability and provide an income source for families. Chickens are relatively low-maintenance and can produce eggs and meat, contributing to food security.Establishing a CBO would give the community a sense of ownership over projects and allow them to pool resources effectively.Again by setting up an NGO focused on specific objectives, the community can access funding and support from donors to tackle their food security issues more effectively.

Access to clean water is a pressing concern. Water sources are not only far away but are often contaminated. The lack of water harvesting systems compounds the issue, especially during the dry season. Furthermore, electricity remains a luxury, with many households relying on torches for lighting, leaving homes dark and unsafe.

Simple rainwater harvesting systems, including gutter installations and water tanks, could significantly improve water access.Providing affordable solar-powered lighting solutions like Sunking lights would brighten homes, enhance security, and improve quality of life.Talking of a more long-term solution involves drilling a well or borehole to provide a consistent and safe water source for the community.

Transportation issues are a major barrier for community members, particularly when accessing healthcare or attending church. The lack of reliable transport options has even resulted in tragic outcomes, such as the death of a pregnant woman who could not reach medical care in time.A motorbike could be a cost-effective way to transport residents, especially in emergencies or for quick trips to the church or hospital.Acquiring a van for the church would provide transportation not just for religious activities but for broader community needs, including health emergencies.

We encountered several serious health issues during our visit. A young man in desperate need of an amputation has been suffering for over two years because the operation costs exceed KES 500,000. His elderly father, who is still working casually in tea farms despite being 85 years old and widowed, struggles to support him. Additionally, an older pastor faces chronic joint pain and fatigue, relying on crutches to move around.

Organizing fundraisers to cover the costs of critical medical procedures like the young man’s surgery could bring hope and relief to struggling families.Collaborating with health organizations to provide medical camps and mental health support would address both physical and psychological needs in the community.

The local church is central to community life, yet it lacks the infrastructure necessary to serve the people effectively. Currently, worshippers gather under a simple tent with inadequate seating. Additionally, there is a need for a structure to house orphaned children and facilitate communal feeding programs.A solid and comfortable space for worship would uplift spirits and serve as a hub for community activities.Constructing a shelter to house vulnerable children and run feeding programs would provide stability and care for those in need.

Education is essential for breaking the cycle of poverty, yet access is limited, particularly for orphaned children and youth. Without support, many young people risk missing out on opportunities that could change their futures.Funding initiatives to sponsor children’s education would ensure they receive the learning and skills they need to thrive.Partnering with educational organizations to provide materials and mentorship can boost the academic performance and prospects of youth in the community.

Women are the backbone of this community, yet there are limited resources specifically addressing their needs. Support programs focusing on women’s empowerment could make a significant impact on both individual families and the broader community.Offering training programs and facilitating access to small loans or savings groups could empower women to start businesses and support their families.

The most immediate needs include establishing a feeding program, constructing a proper church structure, providing essential worship materials, supporting women’s initiatives, enhancing youth education, and ensuring access to reliable power. At Youth Future Lab, we are committed to working alongside this community, engaging with stakeholders, and mobilizing resources to address these pressing issues. Together, we can create pathways for a brighter and more sustainable future for everyone in this community.
