Rarieda, Kenya – July 25, 2023:
In a vibrant and well-attended event, Youth Future Lab, in collaboration with Rarieda Training and Resource Centre—a project of Rafiki wa Maendeleo Trust—officially launched an ICT Hub during the Centre’s Annual General Meeting. The event marked a significant milestone in advancing digital literacy and community empowerment in Rarieda and its environs.

A Community-Centered Celebration
The launch event drew a large and diverse crowd, reflecting the community’s deep interest in technological advancement. Among the attendees were students, parents, chiefs and assistant chiefs, local community members, and representatives from neighboring institutions including Bondo Technical Training Institute and Rarieda Training Institute.
Key partners of Rafiki wa Maendeleo Trust, such as Youth Future Lab, KCB Bank, NCBA, and others, were also present, showcasing the strong collaborative network supporting the region’s development.

The Technology: ASTER Multiseat System
At the heart of the launch was the installation of an innovative ICT system powered by ASTER multiseat software. Youth Future Lab generously donated a central processing unit (CPU) pre-installed with the software, which supports up to 8 independently functioning computer terminals from a single machine. This revolutionary setup significantly reduces hardware costs, saves energy, and increases access to computing resources, making it ideal for educational and community institutions with limited budgets.
The Rarieda Training and Resource Centre supplied the remaining peripherals, including monitors, keyboards, and mice, completing the hub setup. The synergy between the two organizations demonstrated the power of partnerships in achieving sustainable development.
Practical Demonstration and Community Engagement
During the event, Joseph Wambua, the Youth Media Manager at Youth Future Lab, delivered a detailed demonstration on how the ASTER system functions. He emphasized its economic value, low maintenance costs, and ability to increase digital access for many users simultaneously—making it a highly scalable solution for rural and peri-urban settings.
His session was not only informative but also inspired curiosity and enthusiasm among students and local educators, some of whom expressed interest in integrating similar models into their institutions.
Building Competence for the Job Market
One of the key highlights of the initiative is its focus on improving employability among the youth. Community members and partners expressed appreciation for the project, acknowledging its timely relevance in equipping young people with essential digital skills.
The hub is not just about access to computers; it connects learners to Kutambua.com, a flagship e-learning platform developed by Youth Future Lab. This platform offers a wide range of courses, including computer literacy, CBC-aligned educational content, journalism, ICT, and even driving theory, thereby opening multiple pathways for skill acquisition and personal development.
As one community elder noted, “This is not just a donation; it’s an invitation for our youth to dream again—with the tools to achieve those dreams.”
Sealing the Partnership: A Formal Agreement
The event also served as the platform for the formalization of a long-term partnership between Youth Future Lab and Rafiki wa Maendeleo Trust. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was publicly signed, marking the beginning of strategic collaboration in the ICT space.
- Ochieng Awino, Communications Executive at Youth Future Lab, signed on behalf of the organization.
- Mr. Protus Lumiti, Interim Executive Director of Rafiki wa Maendeleo Trust, signed on behalf of his institution.
This MoU aims to foster continuous digital learning, resource-sharing, and community empowerment, setting the foundation for future programs and joint initiatives.

Environmental Stewardship: Tree Planting to Mark the Occasion
In line with promoting sustainability, the launch concluded with a tree-planting exercise, symbolizing growth, longevity, and environmental responsibility. Trees planted during the event will serve not only as a living memorial of the occasion but also as a reminder of the commitment to holistic community development that includes both technological advancement and ecological preservation.

Looking Ahead
With the successful launch of the ICT Hub, the people of Rarieda now have a unique opportunity to bridge the digital divide, access educational resources, and prepare for a more competitive future. Through this partnership, Youth Future Lab and Rafiki wa Maendeleo Trust are empowering communities to leverage technology for sustainable transformation.
The Rarieda ICT Hub stands as a model for similar communities across Kenya and beyond—proving that with the right tools and collaborations, rural areas can thrive in the digital age.
